Dear SSA Members and contest entrants,
Due to a paperwork SNAFU, SSA published the winners for "Your Novel's
First 100 Words" and "Poem Celebrating Arizona's 100th Year of
Statehood" in the wrong order. A list was lost, communication to try
and confirm the winning order was misunderstood (the names were
confirmed, not the order) and a deadline was past, which all led to our
mistake.
It was not our intention to create such an awkward and embarrassing
situation for the winners that were listed in the wrong order.
We would like to offer sincere apologies to the misplaced winners for
this mistake and hope that they forgive our foibles.
The winners that were out of place in "Your Novel's First 100 Words"
were Duke Southard (listed as 2nd but placing 3rd) and Lisa Micks
(listed as 3rd but placing 2nd).
The misplaced winners for "Poem Celebrating Arizona's 100th Year of
Statehood" were D.R. Wise (listed as 1st but placing 3rd), Archie
Hoagland (listed as 2nd but placing 1st) and Margaret Rappaport (listed
as 3rd but placing 2nd).
Our treasurer, Jay McCall has confirmed the final order of the winners
so following is the corrected list:
YOUR NOVEL'S FIRST 100 WORDS:
1st - "GMO" William Adams
2nd - "Fearing Time" Lisa Hicks
3rd - "Betrayed" Duke Southhard
YOUR BEST QUERY LETTER:
1st - "Query letter to Sam" Eileen Erickson
2nd - "Trite but True Query Letter" Cynthia Sabelhause
3rd - "Query Letter for The Swastika Tattoo" Geraldine Birch
POEM CELEBRATING ARIZONA'S
100TH YEAR OF STATEHOOD:
1st - "Old Arizona" Archie Hoagland
2nd - "Arizona's Apache Angel" Margaret Boone Rappaport
3rd - "Arizona Monsoon" D.R. Wise
All these entries were top quality and deserve to be acknowledged as
winners.
While multiple mistakes have caused this unpleasant experience, we will
ensure that there are more checks and balances to prevent similar
incidences in the future.
Thank you for your understanding,
